  • District 9

I know it's been a couple of weeks since I last did a review.  I just haven't had a chance to think of a good one.  Last night I watched the movie, District 9, since it came in the mail through Netflix.  I was very skeptical about this one at the beginning until I got into it.  Released in theaters in 2009.  This movie is produced by Peter Jackson (famed director of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy), and directed by Neil Blomkamp(has only done a few shorts, this was his first feature film).  This film is a very interesting approach.  One, this movie is very creative and original.  It stands apart from all the remakes, reboots and sequels that have been out lately by Hollywood.  It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture, but lost to I forgot who to.

It is hard for me to describe what it is about so I took it from IMDB.

In 1982, a massive star ship bearing a bedraggled alien population, nicknamed "The Prawns," appeared over Johannesburg, South Africa. Twenty-eight years later, the initial welcome by the human population has faded. The refugee camp where the aliens were located has deteriorated into a militarized ghetto called District 9, where they are confined and exploited in squalor. In 2010, the munitions corporation, Multi-National United, is contracted to forcibly evict the population with operative Wikus van der Merwe in charge. In this operation, Wikus is exposed to a strange alien chemical and must rely on the help of his only two new 'Prawn' friends.

What I liked about this movie besides being original and creative is that it keeps you on the edge of your seat.  It's action packed and full of surprises. The special effects were amazing. I sometimes forgot that these creatures were fictional and computer animated.  It's a guys movie.  The only thing that got in the way of the story was the grotesque violence and pervasive language.  I don't mind some violence but this was a blood bath. Language doesn't bother me sometimes until the "F word" becomes every other word and takes away from the dialogue.  But, if you like sci-fi movies and violence, this may be the movie you would love to see!  I do recommend it just don't watch it with children around!  I give it 3 out of 5 stars.
